The New Year can be a golden opportunity for diminutive business owners to turn their struggling or failing business around. If you spent 2008 crying over a bank account that seemed perpetually empty, rejoice! I’m going to show a few simple changes to make to your business that will slash your expenses and increase your sales. All while making your company more profitable than ever before.

Incorporating your Ten Resolutions into a single document is key to making this change. That document of course, is the Business Plan. You can’t sustain it in your head and you certainly can’t sustain it “somewhere” in your computer. Create a plan and effect it down on paper. Resolution 2. This resolution will deal with your Cost of Sale. Put simply, this means the amount of money you will expend on labor and on your supplies and materials to complete a job. Keep in mind that only those dollars paid to labor and supplies and materials related to completing a specific job count as Cost of Sale. Resolution 5. Set a marketing budget. Marketing your business is a science of it’s own. How much will you spend every month to promote yourself? Some companies will spend ten percent of gross sales, some only one percent. When you decide what is most pleasant to your business, write the number down and stick to it every month. You now have control of your marketing dollars.

Resolution 6. State a half hour aside every week to track your progress. Look at the numbers on your business plan. How close to your sales goal are you for the week? How much have you spent of labor? Do you have to adjust things to keep your company on track? You may find that sales are too low and your salespeople will have to spend more time knocking on doors and less time sitting in the office! Expenses too high so early in the week? Cut labor hours, avoid stocking up on your weekly supplies, do what you have to in order to bring those Cost of Sale numbers down!

Resolution 8. Keep your understanding visible. Make sure that your thought is printed out and posted in a visible place. If you can’t see it, you can’t manage it! Too many times a grand idea is jotted down on a memo pad and then shoved into a desk drawer where it’s forgotten. The cold hard numbers you’ve detailed and put down on paper should be staring you in the face throughout the day.

Resolution 9. Decide what additional expenditures you need to view for, and then fabricate allowances for them in your Busness View. Keep in mind that at points throughout the year you will need to budget for additional expenses to facilitate business growth. If you want a secretary by March, you’ll need to factor that increase in labor costs. Will this new employee need a desk? A computer and a phone system? Are you a freelancer? Are you currently working an in house job, while doing freelance work on the side hoping to some day compose it your full-time gig? First of all, you will organize your work more thoroughly ensuring that you keep track of all profit, income and expenditures. Yea apt!” But, you’d be surprised at the amount of money someone is willing to invest in a decent idea. Look at it from the investor’s stand point…

Just think, if you could really document and track the amount of money you make vs. the amount you spend, give yourself a budget and organize your earnings, how much easier will it be to turn a higher profit? Considerable EASIER. You’ll know exactly what you need to earn to break even and/or fetch a profit, while planning for the coming months/years.

-Fill out the forms, and win it done! Go to the Small Busines Administration website and see how easy it is and research what you’re doing.

-Once established, keep ALL reciepts. Depending on the type of business you start, almost everything can be a write off.

Quiet Background

Limiting background noise is the most challenging issue for parents who want a work from home job telecommuting. Everyone’s home life has different challenges and responsibilities. If you have small children or elderly adults that you care for, there are several options for you. Part time or full time childcare for younger children will give you the focus you will need to back your clients. Elderly members of the family that need constant attention may do well in a stimulating adult day program. Consider agencies that can help you find a wonderful personal care assistant to keep them busy during your work hours. Some companies will ask you if there are any children or teenagers in your set during your working hours. Deem the unavoidable situations that may demand your periodic attention through the day when creating your work hours. Some employers are flexible and you may be able to effect a schedule around prior commitments.

If you live come an airport, busy highway, train track, bus station, night club, or any other establishment that is very noisy you may want to spot your work hours around this distraction. If you are building a home deem upgrading the home office by soundproofing the walls during construction. In your current home you can upgrade the windows to filter out the outside distractions. If you have a responsible adult watching your children in another part of the home, be definite to have your office in a room that has a working door lock. Keyhole door locks are not a great option. This type of door lock can easily be picked and opened by small children. An inexpensive sliding, or hook lock that closes on the top corner of the inside of door may be a great alternative to installing a new door. Another option to keep outside noise down is to install a sliding track with hooks from the ceiling that are the width of the door. Use the hooks to hang a thick blanket or decorative quilt, to muffle the noise of a young child that may have broken free from the supervision of the caregiver in the home.

Pets

Place your pets where they cannot be heard, if you can hear them, so can your customer on the other end of the line. Consider investing in professional dog training. Experienced guidance from a professional can help you derive ways to calm your pet, and give you an already tested plan on how to introduce your new work schedule to the dog. Be distinct to post your dogs feeding and outdoor schedule, so that you do not forget, which may result in a loud howling pet. In grievous cases where the dogs cannot go outside, and you have to make a few quick phone calls. Humane dog muzzles may be an option, but should only be used for extremely brief periods of time, and not a long term solution while you are working.

There are headsets that help filter out some of the back ground noise, but do not count on that to believe your calm background. Random recorded quality control calls are done routinely by many employers. Phone calls brought to their attention with excessive background noise could be grounds for suspension, termination of your employment, or end your services contract.

Phone service requirements

Land-line phone – many employers require that you have a hard phone line installed in your home office. Your telephone service many need to have unlimited long distance. Call waiting and reveal mail may need to be disabled while you are working. Companies that do outbound calls may have you disable your caller id, to block your phone number from appearing, before you start making calls. Be sure to call around and surf the Internet to find the best unlimited long distance calling package for your location.

VoIP

Voice over Internet protocol, which is Internet based phone service, may not be accepted by your prospective employer. Popular VoIP companies as Vonage, Sun rocket, are not always options, for your business phone line. Be sure to read the requirements before applying for each position.

Equipment

Do not occupy the headset until you gain employment, because each company’s requirements are different. And may be dependent upon which operating system they are using, and how the calls you receive are routed to you. Some companies do not require a headset, but do allow you to use a land-line corded telephone. Many companies clearly state that cordless telephones are not allowed.

Each employer has different computer, software, and media requirements. Several employers prefer you to have a computer less than 4 years primitive, and Windows based operating system. Each employer has a list of their specifications of the computer systems they are requiring, stated with the application. Some companies may run off Windows XP, or Microsoft Word. For example if you have a Macintosh computer but the employer’s software requirements are not compatible with your computer, then you may have to explore another opportunity. Or purchase the required equipment or software upon hire.

Resume

If you have your basic resume already written up, take a pen out and write out each year and season. Try to brainstorm to remember any activities you participated in outside of your home. Jot down your experiences. Highlight if you volunteered for the PTA fund-raiser, worked at the homeless shelter, or volunteered your professional services. For example if you completed tax returns for others at your church, completed yard work or building maintenance, for the nursing home. List any groups or clubs that you have worked with in any capacity on your resume. Include the name and contact information of any professionals that you may have worked with on short projects, who are familiar with your work ethic, and skills.

Do not give up your search to find a work at home job that allows telecommuting. There are legitimate work at home jobs, where you do not have to pay a fee to apply. By having a opinion in place that assures a unruffled work environment, and the superb home office equipment, you can dedicate your time to getting your resume out there to prospective employers.

Ask any small business owner for a list of their biggest troubles or most aggressive goals, and there are undoubtedly a few things that will be on every entrepreneurs list. Almost all small business owners suffer the same basic hurdles as they work to gain their share of the market. These hurdles are most commonly: Staying in touch with what competitors are doing, staying in touch with customers, effectively marketing goods and services, and finally, staying organized and communicating their ideas and needs to vendors, investors and customers.

Here’s a list of my common geek-chic tech gadgets you cannot live without to help your runt business get a leg up on the competition (and maybe even fabricate some of those tremendous box stores a little jealous).

Getting Brilliant With SmartPhones

Smartphones have taken the pocket-toting media world by storm with their ability to store music, take photos, watch YouTube on the bus and play games on airplanes. But have you considered putting your smartphone to work for you?

I fell in love with the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid earlier this year, and just as other small business owners can attest, when you learn to use the apps effectively they can make business a whole lot easier. Jam packed with thousands of application options, I’ve got a short list of my personal favorites where it comes to managing a small business.

First, the instant access to the internet on Verizon’s 3G network makes comparison shopping a dart. It doesn’t matter whether you find your supplies at a warehouse in the industrial district, or remove up your fare at garage sales, using Google – or better yet scanning product bar-codes – to recognize what prices are being charged elsewhere will give you a leg-up when it comes to negotiating the best prices. Another mammoth feature is the ability to check your business mail while on the go. No need to hunt for WiFi or lug around a laptop when you can read and compose e-mail with a device small enough to fit in your pocket.

My next well-liked feature, particularly with the Motorola Droid, is the easy to use GPS and navigation system. All it takes is a car-dock and a few taps of the screen to procure you going in the right direction without having to purchase a separate GPS unit. Great for small business owners who are always working in unusual territory, the ability to map and navigate on the go saves a ton of time and aggravation.

Facebook and Twitter Marketing Tools

One of the biggest leaps in exiguous business technology is the ability to connect with customers, vendors, clients and investors without having to leave your desk. Social Networking is a new marketing concept that is taking businesses by storm because of its ease of use, low cost and tangible results.

Not only is setting up an account for your miniature business easy, it’s most often also free. Unlike faded marketing campaigns that advertise on a broad scale hoping that consumers are listening, social networking gives small businesses a platform to announce new products, news and announcements directly to customers where they are paying the most attention.

Skype Connectivity

Skype is a concept that has been slow to bleed into the business world, viewed by many as simply another way to chat online with friends similarly to how Yahoo and MSN chat have been used in the past. Skype is now starting to turn the heads of small business owners as they continue to add new features and capabilities that can be integrated into businesses for free that were once only available to huge businesses with expensive infrastructures.

Not honest for internet phone service any more, Skype now also allows runt businesses the opportunity to use V-Calls for free. Reducing the need for rented meeting spaces, travel and time away from customers, V-Calls allow exiguous businesses to video conference over a high quality video system that is smooth and detailed enough for displaying charts and graphs as well as talking “face to face”.

Skype has also introduced Conference Calling services, a product that has previously been too costly for many small businesses. Using conference calling allows business owners to connect simultaneously with customers and business partners when working on large projects and conduct phone meetings with multiple employees or vendors at once.
